Setting

Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Kiyomizu-dera Temple is the named Kyoto landmark that opens both the demo and Capcom’s location page. Malice is the malevolent cloud twisting early Edo-period Kyoto and admitting Genma. The official setting list is five: Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Oni Refuge, Underground Laboratory, Mount Oe, and Yasui Konpiragu Shrine. Dark Masses are knots of resentment the gauntlet can absorb to show a vision of the past. There is no coordinate map and no full mission list.

Cliffside temple halls over autumn trees and a mountain basin, matching Kiyomizu-dera's staged architecture.

Kiyomizu-dera Temple

A famed spot in Kyoto known for its main hall and stage that sit atop a cliff. However, the encroaching Genma and Malice have twisted its appearance.

Oni Refuge

A realm that Musashi enters while exploring Kiyomizu-dera Temple. It appears to hold some connection to the Oni.

Underground Laboratory

Dokyo's laboratory, situated underground in the capital. The facility houses materials and subjects to be used in the creation of new Genma variants, and is replete with traps to toy with and dispose of any would-be intruders.

Mount Oe

A mountain range located in Kyoto, famed for its boundless nature, rich history, and fascinating folklore. The mountain has fallen under the control of a Genma calling themselves Shuten Doji. The fiend awaits Musashi at the mountain's peak.

Yasui Konpiragu Shrine

A shrine renowned for its power to both sever and bind fates. The Genma and Malice's influence has given the shrine grounds the aura of a vibrant paradise, but one that veers into the uncanny.

Severing Fates

Five settings the official site actually names

Kiyomizu-dera Temple is famous for a main hall and stage on a cliff. Genma and Malice twist that look. Oni Refuge is a realm Musashi enters while exploring that temple and appears to hold some connection to the Oni. Underground Laboratory is Dokyo’s facility under the capital, packed with materials, subjects, and traps. Mount Oe is a Kyoto mountain range of nature, history, and folklore now held by a Genma calling themselves Shuten Doji. Yasui Konpiragu Shrine is renowned for severing and binding fates; Malice turns the grounds into an uncanny paradise.

Kennin-ji Temple is named on Burai and Ifuu’s foe blurbs as their lair even though it is not one of the five location cards. Treat it as a boss address, not as a sixth tourist card. Dark Masses can be observed at places such as Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Absorb one into the Oni Gauntlet to see the suffering that created it. Official copy asks what change those visions will bring and how the Oni power will impact Musashi’s tale, and then stops.

The Severing Fates trailer is the video bound to this route. Use it as a look at the shrine’s “sever and bind” theme, not as a spoiler walkthrough. For the first playable slice of Kiyomizu-dera, go back to the demo guide.

Malice is the weather, not a meter

Malice is the malevolent cloud. It twists the capital and admits Genma. Kogashira can release more of it to bolster nearby Genma, which is the only street-enemy interaction Capcom printed. Capcom did not document a Malice number. Read whatever the in-game UI shows during a session.

Souls floating in those spaces are still yellow, blue, and red. Kubi Akari will try to eat them. Absorbing in a Malice-choked courtyard is the same defenseless action described on the gauntlet page, only with worse traffic. Plan the window.

Platforms and versions do not change these place names. Switch 2, PS5, Xbox, and Windows all use the same Kyoto list. Cross-save is unsupported, so a Dark Mass you absorbed on one SKU stays on that SKU.

How the five cards connect to bosses and the demo

Start at Kiyomizu-dera Temple if you are downloading the demo. That is the playable first hour and the place Dark Masses are called out. Oni Refuge is reached while exploring that temple and is the Oni-flavored side of the same landmark. Underground Laboratory is Dokyo’s factory under the capital, full of traps and new Genma. Mount Oe is Shuten Doji’s mountain. Yasui Konpiragu Shrine is Rasho-gan’s uncanny paradise.

Kennin-ji Temple is not a fifth tourist card; it is the lair printed on Burai and Ifuu. Treat it as a boss address. The Severing Fates trailer is bound to this route as a look at the shrine theme. Cross-save is unsupported, so a Dark Mass absorbed on one SKU stays there.

Malice is the cloud that admits Genma. Kogashira can release more of it. Kubi Akari will try to eat souls in those yards. Absorbing still leaves Musashi defenseless, so pick a window. Place names do not change between Switch 2, PS5, Xbox, and Windows.
