Boss roster
Formidable Foes is Capcom’s heading for the named rivals whose martial prowess rivals Musashi’s. The official list is eight: Sasaki Ganryu, Daidara, Dokyo, Greater Nue, Shuten Doji, Rasho-gan, Burai, and Ifuu. Several entries name a lair — Underground Laboratory, Mount Oe, Yasui Konpiragu Shrine, Kennin-ji Temple — which is the only filter this page uses. There is no invented type chart and no health table. Ganryu is also the demo’s first duel, so his row links to a short profile.

A swordsman, also known by the name Sasaki Kojiro. His fate seems inescapably intertwined with Musashi's. It would appear he also wields an Oni Gauntlet...
Sasaki Ganryu, as he next appears before Musashi after their prior duel. His search for greater power has lead him to engage in forbidden Oni Gauntlet practices, which have transformed his body and warped his mind.

A towering Genma that revels in wreaking havoc with mighty swings of its intimidating club. Constantly in a state of hunger, he seeks out sustenance with an obsessive fervor.

道狂
An unusual entity that spends much of her time in her laboratory under the capital, engrossed in creating new Genma variants. One glimpse at the facility's eerie nature is enough to make clear her twisted tastes.

A Genma created by Dokyo. It assaults its prey with feral, agile attacks, and strikes of lightning.
酒呑童子
A large Genma found within a fortress atop Mount Oe, whose heinous acts know no bounds. Legends tell of an Oni by the same name, but could there be some connection here...?

A cunning Genma who has brought harm to many at Yasui Konpiragu Shrine, under the guise of answering their prayers. He employs threads extended from his body to launch devious surprise attacks.

The elder of the Genma siblings that have made Kennin-ji Temple their lair. Just like his younger brother, the promise of good fight gets his blood pumping. He fights with the combination of a naginata-like polearm and contraptions that unleash bursts of lightning.

畏風
The younger of the Genma siblings that have made Kennin-ji Temple their lair. He seeks out duels with worthy challengers, alongside his older brother, Burai. Capable of stirring up powerful gales, he wields the wind to blast away his foes.

Sasaki Ganryu is the human rival with an Oni Gauntlet of his own. A later meeting shows forbidden gauntlet practices warping his body and mind. Daidara is a towering club Genma in a constant hunger. Dokyo works in the underground laboratory creating new Genma variants; Greater Nue is one of those creations and hits with feral, agile attacks and lightning. Shuten Doji waits in a fortress atop Mount Oe. Rasho-gan harms pilgrims at Yasui Konpiragu Shrine with threads from his body. Burai and Ifuu are the Kennin-ji siblings: naginata and lightning versus wind gales.

Greater Nue has no English voice line on the official page. Japanese names sit beside each English name and are the forms to use on Japanese storefronts.
Filter the board by lair when you are planning a Kyoto route. Leave the filter on All when you are learning the roster. Street-level Genma such as Hitotsume Gasa and Kubi Akari are not on this list; they live on the Genma page. Do not look here for a full mission order. Capcom did not publish one.
Underground Laboratory belongs to Dokyo and her Greater Nue. Mount Oe belongs to Shuten Doji. Yasui Konpiragu Shrine belongs to Rasho-gan. Kennin-ji Temple belongs to Burai and Ifuu together. Ganryu and Daidara have no lair field on the official page, so a temple filter hides them. Leave the control on All when you are learning names; switch to a lair when you are planning a Kyoto route.
Dokyo’s lab is also the origin of Chijiko and Greater Nue, which is why the Genma page and this board overlap on her experiments. Shuten Doji’s Mount Oe fortress is the same mountain named on the Kyoto settings list. Rasho-gan’s threads at Yasui Konpiragu Shrine sit next to that shrine’s “sever and bind” folklore. The Kennin-ji siblings split lightning and wind: Burai’s naginata and contraptions versus Ifuu’s gales.
English voices are printed where Capcom printed them. Greater Nue has none. Japanese names travel with every row. Open Sasaki Ganryu’s profile for the demo duel and the later warped return. Everyone else stays on this board; Capcom did not give them their own slugs.
